- About Hapkido: Hapkido is a Korean art that shares common roots with Aikido and teaches a wide assortment of throwing and joint locking techniques. Hapkido also uniquely utilizes an extensive variety of devastating kicks and strikes, as well as a knowledge of grappling and pressure points. The Hapkido curriculum emphasizes three primary principles: nonresistance against force, circular motion in countering and attacking, and absolute penetration of an opponent’s defenses. The diversity of skills encompassed by this art, along with its focus on practical application, make it a great choice for students with an interest in self-defense training.
- Types of skill focus: Striking, throwing, grappling, and joint locks
- This might be the art for you if: you want to cover the broadest range of skill types in a single art, you would like to be able to defend yourself in a variety of situations, or you want to focus on training with the most immediate application to self-protection.
- We offer the Athens area’s only dedicated Hapkido program.
- Number of classes offered per week: 2 classes
- Minimum age: 14 years, with instructor approval
- Instructor(s): Mr. Robert Bishop, overseen by Mr. Richard Wise and Mr. Ken Blumreich
- Accreditation: American Kyuki-Do Federation
- Suggested uniform/ equipment: Judo gi
