- About Judo: Founded by Jigaro Kano in 1882, Judo is a Japanese art that focuses primarily on throwing and grappling techniques. The AKF Athens Judo program employs traditional Kodokan Judo training methods and focuses on Judo as a way to enhance young adults’ and adults’ personal development, technical skills, and self-defense. Students are provided a wide range of learning opportunities that reflect each individual’s goals, whether those goals are fitness, competition, self defense, or traditional martial arts training.
- Types of skill focus: Throwing & grappling
- This might be the art for you if: you want to be able to rely on leverage and body mechanics for personal defense instead of just strength, you are interested in competitive martial arts, you enjoy more structured classes, or you want the most opportunities to train weekly.
- We offer the Athens area’s longest-running dedicated Judo program.
- Number of classes offered per week: 6 classes
- Minimum age: 7 years, with instructor approval
- Instructor(s): Sensei Derek Thiess and Sensei Ken Blumreich, overseen by Sensei Phil Tomporowski
- Accreditation: American Kyuki-Do Federation
- Suggested uniform/ equipment: Judo gi
